Second Hannibal Bridge (Kansas City, Missouri)

USA / Missouri / North Kansas City / Kansas City, Missouri
truss bridge, railway bridge, swing bridge

The Second Hannibal Bridge was opened in 1917, replacing the former Hannibal Bridge. The original Hannibal Bridge had been first permanent bridge to cross the Missouri River. Built by the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad, it was completed in 1869, and had been designed by Octave Chanute. The H&SJ was acquired in 1883 by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, which would later build the new span up stream parallel to the old span. Both bridges where designed as a "swing bridge" - a section of it could be rotated sideways to allow riverboat traffic to pass. America's railroads built 32 crossings over the Missouri River, of which 23 remain in use.
