office building, high-rise, 1969_construction, Modern (architecture)
218-foot, 16-story futurist/modernist office building originally completed in 1969 as a brutalist-style structure with a concrete facade, named the Westyard Distribution Center. Designed by Davis Brody Bond, it was built as a factory which was inspired by Antonio Sant’Elia's vision for La Città Nuova. It was later converted to offices, becoming the headquarters of the "New York Daily News". The building originally had a beige precast concrete facade with a sloped base, and although the facade was cleaned up in 2003, it was seen as out of place with the architecture of the surrounding neighborhood.
The brutalist building was renovated and completely re-clad beginning in 2015 by OMA/REX Architects, and renamed Five Manhattan West, becoming part of the Manhattan West development. The new facade of shiny, silvery-blue glass features a unique, pleated design, with three of the four sides undulating back as it ascends, with the severity of the pleats gradually reducing the higher they go, to the top few floors, where the walls then rise vertically to the roof. Above the 1-story base, each of the four corners is notched back (with terrace space atop the base), and is clad in flat, silver glass. On the building's south facade, the original sloped concrete piers remain exposed at the 2nd floor. Here the ground floor is clad in stainless-steel, and is lined with loading docks. The recessed main entrance is near the east end of the north facade on 33rd Street, with two glass revolving doors and traditional glass doors.
Besides the lobby, the ground floor is occupied by a Whole Foods market, Peloton fitness, a Citizens Bank branch, Katsuya restaurant, Casa Dani restaurant, and a City National Bank branch.
