30 Hudson Yards (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Weehawken / New York City, New York / West 33rd Street, 500
 office building, skyscraper, 2019 construction

1,296-foot, 73-story futurist office building completed in 2019. Designed by Kohn Pederson Fox, it is the tallest building in the Hudson Yards project. Its base is connected to its shorter sister tower to the south (10 Hudson Yards) by the 7-story retail component called The Shops at Hudson Yards.

The prism-shaped building is clad mostly in blue glass, with also some light-grey metal paneling and grey granite near the base. Here, faceted granite piers of various widths and shapes support the upper floors, with areas of glass in between. The main entrance is at the chamfered northwest corner, with glass doors and revolving doors. A wedge-shaped section of glass curtain wall above cantilevers out over the entrance, supported by two of the taller and narrower piers, and the narrows as it rises and merges into the rest of the facade. The west facade's glass panes have thin mullions between floors, and the south facade projects out a bit from the rest of the facade, terminating below the observation deck. The east facade has a large setback above the 21st floor, and there is a wedge-shaped glass shard at the northeast corner, narrowing to a knife-edged point just above this setback. At the base of this wedge is another entrance, covered by a steel canopy with a sloped underside. Above the setback, the east facade slopes away from the city, giving the tower the appearance of leaning toward the Hudson River. The roof line is slanted, forming two triangles falling away in opposite directions and creating an interplay with the protruding wedge of the observation deck below.

The cantilevered, triangular observation deck at the southeast corner is called The Edge, jutting out at the 1,100-foot level, including an outdoor area. Visitors can lean into the 9-foot high clear glass barricade slanted 6.6 degrees outward to safely check out the street and rooftops below. The Edge also features a 225 square-foot glass triangle in the floor which looks down to the street 1,131 ft below. There is also a grand outdoor staircase on the east side of the deck. The building features artwork in the lobby by Jaume Plensa consisting of 11 stainless-steel spheres hanging from the ceiling representing global unity and cultural diversity.
