Connecting BNSF Reno Sub with BNSF Orin Sub
Reno Junction lies on the "Joint Line", which is owned and operated by BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad. This line was built by the Burlington Northern Railroad during 1979, and provides access to 11 large open pit coal mines in Wyoming's Powder River Basin. Together these mines produce nearly 400 million tons of coal a year, most of which feeds powerplants producing electricity. The line heading east leads to the Black Thunder and Jacobs Ranch Mines. They were the 2nd and 4th largest mines in North America during 2007, and produced a combined total of 124,279,835 tons of coal during the year. Arch Coal, the owner of the Black Thunder Mine, is moving ahead with the purchase of the neighboring Jacobs Ranch Mine, which will likely be consolidated into the Black Thunder Mine.
