Helena is the capital city of the U.S. state of Montana and the county seat of Lewis and Clark County. The population was 28,190 at the 2010 census.

Helena was established in 1864 on the finding of gold in the area. One of the settlers suggested the name Saint Helena for the town, after his hometown of Saint Helena, Minnesota. Saint was eventually dropped from the name and the town became known as Helena.

Helena became the capital of the Montana Territory in 1875, and thus became state capital upon statehood in 1889.
