Coal from this mine is transported by BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad to customers throughout North America. During 2007, production from the Jacobs Ranch Mine amouted to 38,101,560 tons, the 4th highest among coal mines in the United States. Arch Coal, the owner of the neighboring Black Thunder Mine, is moving ahead with the purchase of the Jacobs Ranch Mine, and this will likely lead to the absorbtion of Jacobs Ranch into the Black Thunder Mine.
