Upper Town

Romania / Sibiu /
fortification, neighbourhood, Medieval / Middle Ages, invisible, historic district

The first mention of the city is made in 1191 under the name Cibinium (only the Upper Town) in an ecclesiastical document from the Vatican, but there are mentions of the name Villa Cibiniensi (1292 - Lower Town) and Villa Hermani in 1223, sub-city border belonging to Cibinium.
The Upper Town is a medieval neighborhood inhabited in the past especially by the wealthy familyes and the patricians of Sibiu. Here was the Civic Center (Large Square) and Commercial Center (Small Square) of the city. On the west side of the Large Square lies the famous Brukenthal Museum, baroque palace and former residence of the Governor of Transylvania in the 18th century, Samuel von Brukenthal. The Museum first opened for public in 1817.
The Upper Town was fortified between 1330 and 1366 (see the outline).
