The walls, with towers and bastions, bordering south the medieval walled city, is the best preserved part of the old fortifications of the city.
The first walls and defense towers in the area were built in the first half of the 14th century (about 1330-1366), representing the third fortification belt of the city, with the purpose of defending the Upper Town. They can be seen along Cetatii street.
Later, between 1500-1540, were raised artillery rings (smaller bastions), one in front of the Cisnadiei / Heltauertor Gate (demolished), the other in the mid walls, current Thick Tower (today Philharmonic Hall Thalia).
Since mid 16th century were built strong bastions out of brick, two of them on the extremities of the southern fortress walls, current Haller and Cisnadiei / Heltauertor Gate (partially preserved) bastions. Between these bastions were raised strong fortification walls, about 10 m high, virtually doubling the curtain walls of the third belt of fortifications.
This doubling the walls created between them a zwinger, along which there is a ditch, during attacks filled with water.
