The fortified Church of Biertan is part of the seven Fortified Churches from Transylvania which have been included in the UNESCO world Heritage. It is in fact one of the first saxon settlements from the Tarnava Area next to Medias, Copsa Mare. The name of the fortification appears for the first time in a document around 1224. It was also the residence of the Bishopric of the Evangelical Church for about 300 years.
