Lower Town

Romania / Sibiu /
neighbourhood, Medieval / Middle Ages, invisible, historic district

First attested in 1292 as Villa Cibiniensi, as a sub-citadel/suburb of the Upper Town (attested 1191 as Cibinium).
It is the oldest part of the city, where saxon colonists settled around the year 1140.
The Lower Town was inhabited mainly by craftsmen. Several streets in this area have the names of the guilds that activated here.
In this part of the old town lies the oldest square in Sibiu, Dragoner Square, which formed at a crossroad of two important commercial roads (N-S,E-W) in the 12th century.
This part of the city was fortified only beginning with the 15th century, circa 1432-1457. In the 16th century new more powerfull towers and bastions were added to the fortified precinct. Much of the fortifications were demolished during the 19th century. Only 2 towers still exist.
