First mentioned in the 16th century as "Circulus parvus"; 1582-auff dem kleiner Ring; 1751-Kleiner Platz; 1763-Kleiner Ring; 1790-Der kleine Platz; 1875-Kleiner Ring; 1919-Prinz Carls Ring; 1934-Piata Mica; 1947-Piata 6 Martie; from 1990 back to the original name, Piata Mica (Small Square).

The market is divided into two distinct parts by Ocnei Street which falls under the Liars' Bridge to the Lower Town.
The east and west sides of the square follow the outlines of the first two belts of fortifications from the 12th and 13th centuries.
The buildings in Piata Mica (with one exception - No.26) do not have that massive portal, vaulted, characteristic of the Large Square and Balcescu Street. The main feature of the houses in this historic square is the ground floor loggia, vaulted and semiopened towards the market, with semicircular arches on stone pillars. These buildings housed workshops and craftsmen (present day oldest houses are two former guildhalls, at No.21 and 31), in these spaces were the goods exposed. The square could be considered a late medieval shopping mall, nowadays the main activities in the square are tourism, festivals and restaurants with outdoor terraces.
The buildings are high and presents those skylights lens known as "the city eyes."
Most buildings date from the 14th to 16th century, with subsequent modifications.
