The main square from the Historic Center of the city, first time mentioned in 1408 and 1411 (Maior Circulus vulgariter Kornmargt) as a cereal market, the market existed since 1300-1366 along with the completion of the third ring of fortification of the city, around the Upper Town. Since the 15-16 century the square became the center of the medieval city. For hundreds of years was named The Ring or Grosse Ring/Grosser Platz, the square was called between wars King Ferdinand, the communists have called it the Republic Square, and after 1990 returned to it's original name.
The southern side of the square is declared a medieval monument because of the architectural style unique that is maintained here (15th c. patrician houses altered subsequently).
It is worth mentioning the "eyes of the city", as the skylights in the roofs are known.
Iron flags existed on every roof top of the houses and pointed the year of construction either sign of the guild. The square has the length of 142 meters and width of 93 m.
