Lake Abaya is the longest, and is the second largest lake in Ethiopia, after Lake Tana. The primary source of inflow to Lake Abaya is the Bilate River through the northern shore. The lake is situated at an altitude of 1,177 meters (3,863 feet) above sea level, in the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER), about 450 kilometers (280 miles) south of Addis Ababa via Arba Minch highway.
The lake is about 81 km (50 miles) long, and is 30 km (17 mi) wide. It has a surface area of 1,160km² (448mi²), with a mean and maximum depth of 7m (23ft), and 13m (43 ft), respectively. And it is estimated to contain approximately 8.0 billion m³ (283 billion ft³) of water.
