Lake Ziway

Lake Ziway is a freshwater lake that is set at an elevation of 1,638 meters (5,373 feet) above sea level. And is about 161 kilometers (100 miles) south of Addis, in the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER) along Moyale highway. The two main contributors to the inflow of the lake are, the Meki River on the north, and Ketar on the northeast. Its outlet on the southwestern shore forms the Bulbula River, and it flows 48 km (30 mi) due south and empties into Lake Abyata.

Lake Ziway covers a surface area of approximately 500 km² (193 mi²), and is dotted by five islands, of which the biggest one is home to the historic monastery, the Saint Mary of Debre Tsion (Zion), known to have sheltered the Ark of the Covenant for forty years in the tenth century A.D.
