Lake Chamo is famous for its large and significant crocodile population. It is situated at an altitude of 1,110 meters (3,643 feet), in the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER), some 464 km (288 mi) south of Addis Ababa along the Arba Minch highway (via the towns of Buajira, Sodo and Arba Minch). The alternate route from Addis would be along the Moyale highway (via Shashemene, Sodo and Arba Minch), and is about 514 km (318 mi) long.
