Husky Energy - Lloydminster Heavy Oil Upgrader

The oil produced in the Lloydminster area and from Husky's Tucker Oil Sands project 30 km NW is very thick (called heavy oil), so an upgrader facility is needed to convert it into a lighter product called synthetic crude oil (SCO) that is more palatable for oil refineries. Some of this SCO is refined in Husky's nearby asphalt refinery, while the rest is sold to other companies.

The upgrader also produces minor quantities of diesel and other products.
