The section of Arland D. Williams Jr. Bridge where Air Florida Flight 90, a Boeing 737-222 (N62AF), crashed on January 13, 1982 after taking-off from Washington National Airport during a heavy snow storm, killing 74 passengers on-board and 4 on the ground. The bridge was renamed for Mr. Williams because of his heroic efforts to save others, which cost him his life.

Crash attributed to flight crew error in not following proper de-icing procedures just prior to takeoff. In short, ice buildup on wings interfered with the aerodynamics, leading to a loss of lift and subsequent crash.
