invisible, highway interchange / exit
This interchange connects Interstate 395 to U.S. Route 1, and Virginia Routes 27 and 110. Since it's opening in 1942, it has been known as one of the most complex interchanges in the region. By 1975, the interchange was completely reconstructed to eliminate weaving problems. Today, the interchange is comprised of many braided ramps, collector-distributor roads, and directional flyovers up to 3 levels in height. There are 41 bridges within the limits of the interchange. At it's core, Virginia Route 27 crosses over and runs parallel to I-395. At the southern end there is a full directional T, but the northern end is a partial Y and does not provide access between northern I-395 and northern VA-27. The other main junction at this location is a partial interchange at US-1 and VA-110 (featuring one loop ramp and one directional flyover). This is the southern end of the I-395/US-1 overlap and the entry and exit ramps to US-1 from Washington are high speed directional ramps. On the other hand, access to US-1 South from I-395 North is indirect and requires navigating surface streets. The interchange also provides access to Eads Street (tight urban diamond with the express lanes only), Hayes Street (south direction only), Army Navy Drive (via other roads), Arlington Ridge Road (north direction only), and Pentagon parking (north direction only) via service connections.
