Second World War 1939-1945, crash site, landing, squadron (military), emergency service
Two Boeing B-17 'Flying Fortresses' and six Lockheed P-38 'Lighnings' with a total of 25 crew members on board was forced to crash-land here during foul weather over Iceland on July 15, 1942. The crews were rescued within a few days, but the airplanes were abandoned and, over the years, covered by ice.
One of them was brought from 300 feet deepness to the surface in 1992, later restored and named "Glacier Girl".
