ship, shipwreck, landing
The La Moure County was the 16th member of the Newport Tank Landing Ship Class and was a member of the US Pacific Fleet from 1971 to 2000.
On September 12th, 2000 the ship was conducting excercises with members of the Chilean Navy when she ran hard aground at Caleta Cifuncho Bay. Underwater inspections revealed that most of her steering and propulsion systems had been ripped off the ship and hull damages were so severe that she was deemed uneconomical to repair. After being freed from the shore she was towed to Talcahuano where she was stripped of equipment and decommissioned.
Following her decommissioning she was towed offshore and used as a target ship during UNITAS 2001 and sank at this location in 1,841 fathoms.
