The ExxonMobil Baton Rouge Chemical Plant site dates to World War II when the world's first butyl rubber plant was constructed there to support the war effort. The Baton Rouge Chemical Plant is ExxonMobil's largest chemical plant.

While some chemical products are manufactured to the south in the Baton Rouge Refinery, the Chemical Plant manufactures chemical products exclusively. Products manufactured on this site include ethylene, propylene, 1,3-butadiene, isobutylene, isoprene, benzene, isopropyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, neo acids, hydrocarbon resins, butyl polymers, and EPDM elastomers.
