City with a population of 227,017 in 2007: second largest city in Louisiana. State capital. Originally inhabited by Native Americans who called the area Istrouma. In 1699 French explorers passed the site and saw a tree covered in bloody animals and fish that served as a boundary marker - they called the area "Baton Rouge," French for "red stick," after the marker. Settled by Acadians after their expulsion from Canada by the British. Incorporated as a city in 1817. The state capital was moved here in 1849. During the Civil War, the Union forces captured the city in 1862 and the state capital was moved. The capital returned here in 1880. Refugees fleeing New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina lifted the population of the city temporarily in 2005, but many of them have left the city.
