Lafayette has the second biggest celebration of Mardi Gras in the world. [behind New Orleans] There are 8 parades that run the same route through Lafayette. The Krewe of Carnivale Rio Parade kicks it off on the second Friday before Fat Tuesday, then the Friday Night Kickoff Parade on the first Friday before Fat Tuesday, then the Children's Parade & Bonaparte Parade the Saturday before Fat Tuesday, then the Queen's Parade that following Monday, then the King's Parade, Lafayette Mardi Gras Festival Inc. Parade & the Independence Parade on Mardi Gras Day.

Le Festival de Mardi Gras a' Lafayette [the fair in Cajun Field] is held on Friday-Tuesday [Mardi Gras Day].

There are other parades held on the outskirts of Lafayette that are also very popular. Like the Scott, Carencro, Youngsville, Lake Fausse Pointe, Krewe of Ezans Jeanerette, Krewe of Andalusia, Grand Marais, Krewe of Coteau & the Family Affair Parades.

There are 12 pageants and balls held throughout Lafayette in the Cajundome, Heymann Performing Art Center & Lafayette Convention Center for certain Krewes.

It is a great city that is growing rapidly. Regardless of the economic downfall and halt in the market, Lafayette is not feeling the effects of it. It is still becoming a wonderful city to live in and more oriented compared to other cities in the state. It's livelihood may be harsh at the moment due to the construction everywhere, but that shows the growth of the city.

  • Wonderful city. Just too many issues with their government and they don't treat the city as one. They only focus on certain parts of Lafayette.
