They take hydrocarbon feedstock (mostly the cast-off by-products of oil refining and natural gas production) and make ethylene. Then they take the ethylene and turn it into derivative products like polyethylene (used in milk jugs, storage bags, RubberMaid containers, etc.), ethylene glycol (biggest use is in PET for soda and water bottles and medicine containers), and ethylene oxide, which is an intermediate building block for many everyday compounds.
