449 Third Avenue (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / Third Avenue, 449
 apartment building, commercial building

5-story mixed-use building completed in 1888. Sometime in the mid-late 1900s, the ground floor was modernized with a steel-framed commercial glass storefront with a low granite base, projecting out from the north and west sides. It has a recessed entrance with glass doors at the south end on Third Avenue, and extends most of the way down 31st Street. Past it, the ground floor is clad in grey stone blocks and there is a 2-story rear extension continuing the ground floor (with a couple steel doors and a small storefront at the east end), with red brick on the 2nd floor, where there are three single-windows.

The upper floors of the main building are clad in beige-painted brick. THe north facade has two bays of rather wide single-windows in the middle, each of which has been shortened to some degree. To the west is a bay of narrower single-windows (with an extra window on the 2nd floor). To the east is a large single-window on the 2nd floor and smaller paired windows on the other floors, and an east end bay of narrow single-windows. Most of the windows have flat, brown stone sills and lintels. Fire escape balcony landings run across most of the facade on each floor. The facade is crowned by a brown metal roof cornice with brackets and modillions.

The upper floors on the west facade facing the avenue have three bays of single-windows, and a fire escape running down the southern two. The roof cornice continues onto this side as well. The rear, east-facing facade has one bay of windows, with a metal duct running down the center, and a chimney at the south end. The exposed southern facade is parged brick with no openings.

The ground floor is occupied by Moonstruck restaurant, with 202 Cleaners at the east end.
