Located on a 12 acre island, the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.

This base of the monument is actually Fort Wood, an earlier fortification modernized under the Third System beginning in 1841.

As of 1851, it was intended to be armed with twenty-six 42-pounder seacoast guns, seventeen 32-pounder seacoast guns, eleven 18-pounder guns, six field pieces, thirteen 8" heavy seacoast howitzers, two 10" heavy mortars and two 10" light mortars, for a total of 77 guns.

Closed after the 9/11 attacks, the stairs to the crown were reopened to the public on a limited basis on July 4, 2009.

The statue of Liberty symbolizes the new life, which U.S. gave to all the people who came as immigrants in 1900's.
