residence, Tudor (architecture), townhouse
5-story Neo-Gothic townhouse originally completed in 1845 as a Greek-revival house. It was renovated by Frederick Sterner in 1910 for Joseph B. Thomas, with a completely new facade. For years Thomas was president of the Gramercy Park Association. After Thomas tied in 1955, the townhouse was sold to advertising executive Robert B. Grady and his wife, Irma, and then in 1970 to E. J. Smith. After the turn of the century it was purchased by fashion designer Oleg Cassini.
The Gothic facade is clad in multi-colored brick above a limestone ground floor that is actually partially below-grade. The entrance on the right is approached by several steps down from the sidewalk, behind an iron gate set in a stone surround with a pointed-arch. Two windows to the left also have iron grilles, below drip moldings. At the 2nd floor is another window with a drip molding and iron grilles, while to the right is a wide opening lined in limestone, with a band of six narrow arched windows. The 3rd & 4th floors have triple-windows on the right, and smaller single-windows on the left, again in limestone surrounds with drip moldings. The 5th floor consists of a stepped gable harboring crouching gargoyles and a carved coat of arms carried out the Gothic motif, with a double-window at the center. All of the windows have diamond-shaped leaded-glass panes.
