Originally constructed in 1926 as a steam turbine electric generating station operated by Detroit Edison. The excess steam was sold and piped underground to many downtown office buildings and hotels for heat. Although the electric generation station is no longer needed, the plant is maintained because of the large number of buildings which rely on it for heating.
