Detroit, Michigan

USA / Michigan / Detroit /
 city, county seat

Detroit is the largest city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 713,777 at the 2010 census. Detroit is a primary cultural, financial, and transportation center in the Metro Detroit area, a region of 5.3 million people.

The city serves as a major port on the Detroit River connecting the Great Lakes system to the Saint Lawrence Seaway. It was founded on July 24, 1701, by the French explorer, adventurer, and nobleman Antoine de la Mothe, sieur de Cadillac.

Detroit has experienced a long-term decline in economic strength due to a number of factors, including the shifting of population and jobs to suburbs and other states. Indicative of this decline is a greater than 60 percent drop in population since its peak of 1,849,568 at the 1950 census and some of the highest crime levels in the United States.

Detroit filed for bankruptcy in July 2013, the largest city to do so.

  • Thank you rkelzo, I will consider it, and sorry for the arguements. zbake, Detroit challenged the census, meaning people arent coming back, they just boosted the number by about 20,000. Detroit has became the poster child, unfortunately, but because they have not capitalized on many issues, and have let bad get to worse. Detroit has amazing arhitecture, and things will get better. I have faith in Detroit.
  • We are all passionate people when it comes to our native cities!
  • detroit was named one of the "50 places to go in 2008" in the New York Times!!!!
  • why not make the city go green, by increasing higher density within the inner city area with smart growth, as well as making it energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and urban friendly, making public transportation much more better, and limiting automoblie usage, and increase security, creating organizations and institutions which will eliminate racism, shootings and other types of crimes, and remove the bad government and replace it with the good government, that way the city not be dangerous anymore.
  • Detroit, Michigan...no words from an encyclopedia can describe what was once a thriving and lively auto city back in the glory days of the 1950's. Now, thanks to the riots of 1967 and rapid white flight, combined with a crumbling auto industry and almost abysmal school system, Detroit has become a highly abandoned and abused community. There are probably many points to describe how disgraceful this city has become, but let me list the key factors. -White flight -Very High Crime Rate -Underperforming and terrible school system -Deteriorating automotive and manufacturing industry -High abandonment -An arrested mayor Sure, the city might be enjoying a small revival of its downtown area (2 hotels under renovation, and the Detroit Riverfront), but that still that doesn't stop the outer city limits from heavy blighting. Even the cities of Hamtramck and Highland Park are underperforming just as equally as Detroit is. I don't even blame citizens if they choose to leave Detroit, because they can easily see how this city is struggling. And an arrested Kwame Kilpatrick? Don't even get me started on the scandal... I'll continue in my part 2 whenever I get it posted.
  • Detroit is interesting....... I still think they should take the approach though that they are taking here in Cleveland, and learn to deal with stuff. I was suprised with the amount of decay in Detroit. It wasn't pretty. Downtown Detroit seemed very dead, here in Cleveland is is very alive, and construction is all over the downtown, not just concentrated in one area. I wish Detroit luck though in the future.
  • Detroit isn't as bad as most people make it out to be. Downtown Detroit is great, there's lot's to do and they've now finished a nice waterfront park in front of the Renaissance Center. There's a few casinos in the area, and Detroit has some nice suburbs (but they don't count as Detroit). That aside, Detroit really does have a lot of problems, especially with crime, the economy and corruption. A lot of people from the Detroit actually deny that those problems exist, and boast about how great Detroit is, but that's denial. Detroit IS the worst city in the nation. So how can it improve? Detroit needs to move on from relying on the auto industry and move towards green technology and renewable energy. The city also needs to get rid of all the corrupt politicians, reduce crime, clean up the ghettos, and encourage business to come to Detroit, especially businesses that are involved with renewable energy which is the industry of the future. Another problem, and this is a touchy subject, but the obvious segregation of races between Detroit and the suburbs. It shouldn’t be like that, and that won’t change until the city makes an effort to improve the neighborhoods so more people will move IN and not OUT. Detroit has A LOT of potential. If people put their heads together to make it work, it will work, but that has yet to happen. Detroit has slowly been improving, although the national current economic situation doesn't help. But once that is over, Detroit can improve a lot if people can put together a realistic plan to save Detroit.
  • detroit rock city!!!!!!
  • heres my plan to save the city. step 1- get rid of as much corruption as possible. step 2- restore the historic buildings and convert them into high rise condos. step 3- establish a safe, efficent, and enviromentaly friendly mass transit system. step 4- elimenate the gang problem using aggressive, non corrupt policing, and harsh sentences for gang members. step 5- diversify the economy. establishing high-tech enviromentaly friendly factories producing high quality products and providing good pay and benefits to workers. step 6- tear down abandoned buildings, public eyesores, and crackhouses, and replace them with restraunts specialty shopping casinos and high rises. step 7- invest in renewable resouces(ie, solar power plants and wind farms. step 8- establish a tourism industry by working to elimenate bad perceptions of the city. well thats my $0.02 worth, so long.
  • also panzerschreck Detroit would also need some other mode of transportation besides buses and cars. To make a city grow you need trolleys and subways. After they took out the trolleys in the mid 50s the population started to drop. Transportation would definetly be number one on my list.
  • The first bessemer steel mill was established in Detroit.
  • I lived in Detroit and antended Wayne States University. Detroit is Great City... It has problems and issues just like any other city in the wolrd. I Love Detroit City.
  • Mayor Bing is doing an awesome job
  • To me, Detroit is a fascinating place: a little rough around the edges and definitely not my favorite place. I read "Reimagining Detroit", recently, and although it's far from restoring the city to its former glory, it does make it a little more warmer, more interesting, and a good read.
  • it used to be a city of autoworkers, now it's a city of total ruin.
  • god bless detroit, hope she can become a shining city on a hill again
