These four apartment buildings were destroyed by the Russian Air Force on May 28, 2017. Russia suspected they were being commandeered by ISIS for use as a command post, as they had determined ISIS leaders were meeting there to prepare for the upcoming battle for Raqqa. Russia's Defense Ministry later said that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi "could" have been killed. There was a great controversy over whether or not he had been killed, if he had died earlier, or if he was still alive. It was later determined that he did not die in the strike, and may not have been present at all.
