Docletian City-Wall (Palmyra (Tadmur))

Syria / Hhims / Tudmur / Palmyra (Tadmur)
 ruins, fortification

After the fall of the border fortress Dura Europos (Euphrates River) in 256, Palmyra changed from a trade-center to an important strategic borderpost of the Roman Empire against the Sassanides. The city was enlarged and strengthened unter Diocletian 283-305 with a large city wall. Enforced under Justinian 527-65; the decline of Palmyra in the following centuries led to the decay of the city wall under Ottoman rule. Rebuilt in recent decades.
