Al-Raqqah Governorate (Arabic: مُحافظة الرقة‎‎ ALA: Muḥāfaẓat ar-Raqqah) is one of the fourteen governorates (provinces) of Syria. It is situated in the north of the country and covers an area of 19,616 km². The governorate has a population of 921,000 (2010 census office estimate). The capital is al-Raqqah. The Islamic State of Iraq and Levant claimed full control of this province as of August 24, 2014 when its fighters captured Tabaqa Airbase in the southwest part of the province.
The north of Al Raqqa Governate now falls under the 'Federation of Northern Syria – Rojava' controlled by the Syrian Democratic forces (SDF)
The governorate is divided into 3 districts (manatiq): Tal Abyad, Al-Thawrah, Al-Raqqah.

  • This is a pré-2011 division of Syria representing the 'view' of the Baathist party. But this does not represent the 2016 real/de facto administrative divisions in place in this region.
  • The marked area is really flawed. Simple proof: Ma'adan is one of the biggest towns in Raqqa yet it is not in the marked area.
  • Thanks for pointing it out. Ma'adan district is part of Raqqa Governoarte and it seems to be the final border with Deir Ezzor Governorate.
  • Fixing the polygons according to the data from UNICEF, taken from the official Syrian census of 2004. The town of Marufah is part of Aleppo province, unlike shown in the "simplified" version of Syria's governorate borders
