Gimbels Skybridge

USA / New Jersey / West New York /
interesting place, bridge, Art Deco (architecture)

Designed c. 1922 by in the Art Deco style by Shreve & Lamb to connect the former Gimbels store with the administrative building at 116 West 32nd Street. A separate bridge over 33rd Street, now removed, connected the Gimbels and Saks stores. That bridge was demolished in 1966 when E. J. Korvette took over Saks-34th Street. Although intact, it remains unused.

The triplex skybridge has broad windows and magnificent green-patina copper cladding. Although there is classical ornament, such as pilasters and coffers, the flat, machinelike character of the material suggests Art Deco, then barely emergent in the United States. It fill the western bay, from the 10th -12th floors.
