 apartment building, Modern (architecture)

676-foot, 60-story Neo-Modern residential building completed in 2015 for the Moinian Group. Designed by Goldstein Hill & West with interiors by the Rockwell Group, the sleek tower consists of two intersecting slabs, with indented southeast and northwest corners and thin white vertical piers. It is clad in a silver glass-and-metal curtain wall above a large, tall, 2-story base of retail and amenities that has canted glass walls. Included on the deck of the base are two outdoor pools and patio spaces. Except for at the east end, the base along 43rd Street is vertical instead of slanted, with a different curtain wall of light-grey metal panels and dark-tinted glass, and rises up higher where it supports the tower, then extending far to the west down most of the block, with multiple loading docks and entrance/exit to the parking garage.

The slabs of the tower are set back from the base, with the tower's first level slightly recessed below the rest of its mass. The northern slab rises slightly higher than the south. The northern section of the tower has thin white horizontal bands every two floors while the southern section has them every floor. The northern section has two thin white vertical piers flanking the center section of its eastern façade which does not have horizontal banding. The slightly thinner southern section has only one thin vertical pier that is placed closer to its southern edge. The northern section’s “piers” rise up and cover the top of the building enclosing a setback trellis/screen rooftop.

At the south end, on 42nd Street, the base opens up to an expansive front courtyard and driveway with a central, bronze pumpkin-shaped sculpture. Along with the lobby and building amenities, the base includes a Lifetime Fitness gym, and the north side is occupied by a Volvo dealership. There are projecting balconies with glass railings on the thin west-facing exposures of the tower. The north slab has a single column of balconies, while the south end has three, up to the top 20 floors, where instead there are two columns of wider balconies.

Sky contains 1,174 apartment units, and is New York's largest single rental tower.
