skyscraper, apartment building
402-foot, 40-story modernist residential building completed in 2001. Designed by Costas Kondylis, this colossal rental apartment tower has 921 units and anchors the western end of 42nd Street overlooking the Hudson River. The complex has a motor court on 42nd Street, entered through a gateway that complements the rest of the building. The circular driveway to the right fronts the main entrance, while to the left a drive continues through to 41st Street, passing under the east part of the tower. On the south end, adjoining where the drive opens onto 41st Street, there is a ramp to the parking garage in the podium from which the west end of the tower rises. The podium continues all the way to 12th Avenue, with pair of tennis courts and a glass-enclosed pool on top, and amenities inside including a fitness center, basketball court, and Lucky Strike bowling alley. The podium, clad in pale orange-red brick, runs nine bays along 42nd Street, with the tower rising above the eastern two, and 14 bays along 41st Street, with the tower rising from the eastern six, where both levels have metal louvers. The next bay to the west has a wide freight entrance with metal roll-down gate and begins the pattern of bays with small, square vents with decorative grilles on the upper level, extending to the west. The lower levels have tripartite metal-and-glass storefronts. This pattern continues on the seven bays of the west facade of the podium, where the northern two bays have an extra floor on top, with large, square, multi-paned windows in each bay. The piers all along the podium extend up above the roof line, connected by glass-and-metal railings.
The multi-angled tower is clad in bands of grey-tinted windows alternating with bands of pale orange-red brick between each floor. The numerous corners are accented by incised horizontal bars, and the middle spaces have regularly-appearing black metal vents. The tower is basically divided into two main masses, the eastern one rising to the 30th floor and the western one to the 40th floor. Both roofs have brick-clad mechanical housings. The east tower is roughly shaped like a "C", wrapping around the motor court, while the north tower more closely resembles a "V", with the point joining the shorter east tower, and the notch of the "V" facing west, overlooking the podium. The ground-floor retail space on 42nd Street is occupied by Kings of Kobe restaurant.
