The Atelier Building (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / West 42nd Street, 635
 skyscraper, condominiums

521-foot, 46-story modernist residential building completed in 2007. Designed by Costas Kondylis & Partners, it is clad in a curtain wall of blue glass and grey metal. The 3-story base has a double-height ground floor with a glassy front of transparent, slightly green-tinted glass below the tower section. The main entrance is near the east end, under a suspended stainless-steel canopy. The upper part of the base, and the section extending over to the west is clad in light-grey metal panels. At the 2nd floor, above the greenish glass, is a band of darker windows. The west section has no openings above the ground floor, where there are four bays of storefronts, housing a restaurant. Atelier's main roof deck is on top of this section of the base, with the tower rising above the east section.

The slab tower's south facade has nine bays in the middle in which the blue windows are framed in a grid of light-grey metal; they are all tripartite windows except at the end bays of the middle section, which are wider and have a small wrap-around to the set-back end wings of the facade. These span the width of about two bays, and have darker-grey metal spandrels between floors. The north and south façades have four 2-story-high protruding paper-clip-like façade elements at the corners of the building that extend about two-thirds of the way across the façades in alternating fashion. Where they cross the recessed end sections, they create projecting wrap-around balconies. The first one is on the west side, at the 11th-12th floors; the second is on the east side at the 20th-21st floors; the third is at the west on the 29th-30th floors, and the final one is at the east side at the 38th-39th floors. Above the first eastern element (the second one overall), the eastern end bay of the gridded middle bays drops off, and the darker end sections continues up as a wider section. The same thing happens on the west side above the third paper-clip element. The tall mechanical penthouse on the roof is clad in light-grey metal panels.

The metal-clad base extends through the block, offset to the west of the tower, to 43rd Street, where the only openings are a freight entrance at the east end, a small service door, and an entrance/exit to the underground parking garage at the west end. Atelier contains 478 condominium units. Part of the ground floor is occupied by CNVS Event Venue.
