office building, apartment building
9-story Arts & Crafts-style cooperative-apartment building completed in 1881. Designed by Stanford White (of the firm of McKim, Mead & White), it is clad in dark-red brick above a 2-story, heavily-rusticated limestone base. On the ground floor, the central entrance has a stone surround decorated with gold circles and brackets supporting a dentiled cornice. A round, red canvas awning extends out over the sidewalk. On either side is a secondary door under a round-arch with carved stone, and a narrow slit window. The end bays have double-windows with splayed lintels and scrolled keystones. The projecting sections of the rustications are decorated with a pattern of small vertical rectangles in the stone. The 2nd floor has double-windows in the end bays, and triple-windows in the two center bays. A dentiled cornice tops the 2nd floor, with four console brackets supporting a pair of stone balconies with balustrades at the center bays.
The brick upper floors also have triple-windows in the middle bays and double-windows in the end bays, which are framed by brick quoins. All the window groups have red stone sills and splayed brick lintels. The top floor has pilasters with decorative brickwork between the three windows of the middle bays, and a cross-hatch pattern in the brickwork at the piers. This floor is topped by a stone band and a simple dentiled roof cornice. The side elevations are plain brick walls.
The building contains 43 apartments.
