The Vanguard Chelsea (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / West 24th Street, 77
high-rise, apartment building, 2000_construction, postmodern (architecture)

282-foot, 29-story postmodern residential building completed in 2000. Designed by Schuman, Lichtenstein, Claman & Efron, it has a 5-story base (with a 1-story plaza podium extending back to the east side of the property), with the main tower portion set back from the street. The tower has chamfered corners, and two sets of bay windows running up either side of the facade, which is clad in red brick with beige brick bands across the tops of the 5th, 12th and 20th floors.

Fronting the avenue, the base is five stories at the corners, where it is capped by bands of beige brick, and 1-story tall in the center (above which is a deep setback to the main tower) and running back along the side streets. The red brick piers are edged with beige pre-cast stone and sit on grey granite bases. The storefronts lining the ground floor along the avenue are framed in brown metal. On the base, all the windows facing the avenue are tripartite, with roughly square center panes flanked by narrower ones. Those on the 2nd & 5th floors also have transoms. The north and side faces of the base each have a bay of triple-, single-, and double-windows before dropping down the the 1-story sections that setback to the main tower. The main entrance is on 24th Street, framed in brass. At the far east end is the entrance to the underground parking garage.

The flat sections of the tower's facades have either double- or triple-windows, with metal vents beneath each group. The chamfered corners and projecting bay window groups have wrap-around windows.

This building has 301 rental apartments, and began the highrise boom of residential towers lining this stretch of 6th Avenue. The ground floor is occupied by a CVS pharmacy, European Wax Center, and a Starbucks coffee.
