113 Waverly Place

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / Waverly Place, 113
 apartment building, 1840s construction

4-story residential building completed in 1842 as a 3-story townhouse. It was remodeled to provide a basement entrance and, at the top, a parapet the line of which blends in height with its neighbor's cornice. Altered in Federal style of the Eclectic period, its new, elaborate doorway is surmounted by an arched leaded transom. Spandrel panels with delicate swags are located between the two upper stories, and band courses at certain levels provide a unifying horizontality.

The Church of Our Lady of Pompeii originally opened in a storefront at this address in 1894. Its first focus was helping Italian immigrants exploited by the padroni who financed their trip over.
