114 Waverly Place (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / Waverly Place, 114
 apartment building, 1820s construction

4-story residential building originally completed in 1826 as a 3-story rowhouse. It was redesigned in the Art Nouveau style with a fourth floor in 1920 by William Sanger for portraitist Murray Bewley. Here the straight roofline has disappeared in favor of an immense parabolic sweep enframing an arched studio window, typical of the French Art Nouveau style. The entrance floor has been given an Italian styling, with English basement stoop and round-arched doorway and window. The exterior is stuccoed and painted a salmon color. After being left in poor shape, it is being restored in 2024.
