apartment building, 1925_construction
150-foot, 16-story residential building completed in 1925. Designed by Deutsch & Schneider, the upper and lower floors are emphasized. Between them, the dark reddish-brown brick walls rise sheer, with an even pattern of windows. The east facade has three bays of paired windows, while the south facade has 12 individual bays, four of which have smaller windows.
The first two floors sit on a white stone base and are embraced by a series of two-story pilasters with Corinthian capitals, surmounted by a cornice. At the main entrance on Washington Place, two medallions with carved faces are located between the 1st and 2nd floors, and rather flat, carved stone urns extend above at the 3rd floor. A stone band course also tops the 3rd floor. At the mid-section, the corners have brick quoins, and there are small iron balconettes at the 5th-floor center bay on Washington Square West, and two of the bays on Washington Place. Many of the windows have thru-window air conditioning units.
The two top floors have, between horizontal band courses, a pair of pilasters centered and crowned by a broken pediment motif against the brick of the loggia on the roof. Iron balconies protrude from four of the bays on the Washington Place side. The western elevation and exposed upper part of the northern facade have similar design and materials.
Residents include comedian Seth Meyers.
