Old Town Bar & Restaurant

USA / New Jersey / West New York / East 18th Street, 45
bar, interesting place, movie / film / TV location

Old Town Bar is in a 3-story building completed in 1902. Designed by Richard Berger as a store and residence, it is clad in red-painted brick above a cast-iron storefront. The three bays of the storefront are flanked by Ionic columns; the whole is framed by large pilasters. Doors below transoms with beveled glass lead into the building. Arched windows above the storefront bays contain beveled glass. Above this level are prism glass transoms with colored glass crests. Cantilevered from the second story corner is an early neon sign reading "Old Town Bar Restaurant." The facade is crowned by a brown galvanized iron entablature with a paneled frieze.

By 1906, there was a saloon in the building; and by 1912, when a new store front was added, there was a restaurant. The present occupant, the Old Town Bar and Restaurant, opened here in 1936. It has been named the best old bar in New York, and one of the best bars in America. Originally a German establishment called Viemeisters, the 19th century interior has been remarkably preserved. It has been a popular location for film productions like "Gotham" and "Sex and the City". It was also used for S1E4 of the Starz Network original series "Power".
