The Carl Fischer (New York City, New York)

12-story Neo-Classical residential building completed in 1923. Designed by W.K. Benedict as a store and factory for sheet music publisher Carl Fischer Company. Carl Fischer, a German immigrant, died around the time the company moved into 56-62 Cooper Square. That year, his son Walter Fischer succeeded him as company president. The building contained the firm's store, offices, and printing press until 1999, when it was converted to condominiums. The north elevation of the building still features a giant painted music note with a working clock on the note head, and the words "THE CARL FISCHER".

The east facade facing Cooper Square is seven bays wide. The 3-story limestone base has five triple-height round-arches in the center. Within the arches are marble spandrel panels between the 2nd & 3rd levels. The transitional 4th floor is also limestone, with paired windows, as seen on the floors above. The 4th floor is capped by a cornice. The upper floors are clad in buff-colored brick, with uninterrupted piers, molded terra-cotta bandcourses, and decorative brick spandrels. The south elevation is also buff-colored brick, with windows in doubles and triples.
