The Brunson Theater (opened in 1949) was bought by the City of Baytown in 1997, and now only the facade remains because of neglect. The City of Baytown is planning to bring the Brunson building back into use in some way, in 2014 the city began to open the door to consider proposals such as one to turn the building into an art gallery and another to turn the theater into a performing arts venue. The city chose a proposal for an arts & entertainment center for the building and a restaurant/bakery next door. Construction began November of 2014 and had an expected completion date of late 2015, but the deal was terminated in May of 2015 due to disagreements between the developer and the city over missed deadlines. The city has expressed interest in reviving the deal if the developer is still interested.

  • It's really sad, missed deadlines, these things sometimes take more than initially planned on, and the overall good the rebuilding of the Brunson would have done Baytown has now been lost due to the city government's lack of working with this person. Everyone loses!
  • Unbelievable the city would bicker over missed deadlines. What a joke
  • Now the City has wasted money on an outdoor ice skating park close to The Brunson where you can ice skate perhaps one month out of the year. Funds for that and the money needed to fix Texas Ave. and the sewer/water systems that caved in from the construction of this park could have gone to put a roof on The Brunson that could be used year round.
