 restaurant, office building

5-story Queen Anne-style commercial building completed in its current style in 1895. Designed by Julius Kastner as a store and factory for Jesse Brown, it is clad in red-painted brick. The 2nd-floor windows have rounded pediments on small scrolled brackets, while the 3rd & 4th-floor windows have flat cornices on the same brackets. At the corner of the 2nd floor, the pier is ornamented by a carved stone capital with the date 1895, which supports one end of a stone cornice that runs across the 3-bay south elevation. Another cornice runs below the 5th floor. On this short facade facing Broome Street, the center windows also have full enframements, with a triangular pediment on the 3rd floor, and grey cornices above the 2nd & 4th floors. The longer Crosby Street facade has 11 bays. Both facades are topped by a black metal roof cornice with a projecting rounded corner.

The structure was originally erected as a dwelling in the early 19th century, and occupied by a grocer and liquor importer as early as 1854. The building’s ground floor has been occupied by a restaurant since 1958, currently called Chicane. The upper floors are still in commercial use.
