office building, Romanesque (architecture), 1907_construction
8-story Romanesque-revival office building completed in 1907 as a store-and-loft building. Designed by Schwarz & Gross and B.N. Marcus, it has a 2-story base with the ground floor lined with storefronts. The 2nd floor has large square panes of three over three windows. The Lafayette elevation is divided into three wide bays, and the Walker Street elevation into four bays.
The upper floors are clad in orange brick, with triple-windows in each bay divided by black iron mullions. Small stone bands run across the piers at the top of the 3rd & 6th floors. The stone spandrels are intricately carved with floral patterns. On Walker Street, the left two windows openings in the second bay from the east are filled by black metal vents up through the 7th floor, where each bay culminates in a limestone segmental-arch with a keystone. Cartouches ornament the tops of the piers between each bay, flanked by decorative garlands linking to the keystones. Above a stone cornice, the top floor has three square-headed windows with full stone surround in each bay. The two main facades are crowned by a green metal projecting roof cornice with modillions and dentils.
The two secondary facades are smooth-stuccoed and painted white, with a handful of paired windows and smaller single windows. A round water tower is located on the northeast corner of the roof. The building now houses mainly medical and dental offices. The ground floor is occupied by Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Lucky Stone & Feng Shui, 2mro wireless store, and Herbal Center, Inc.
