apartment building, 1850s construction, Italianate style (architecture), historic landmark

5-story Italianate residential building completed in 1852 as a store-and-loft building. Designed by Field & Correja, it is clad in marble, with each floor having different window treatments; on the 2nd floor they are round-arched; the 3rd floor are segmental-arched; the 4th floor has rounded corners; and the top floor has squared windows with peaked lintels on top. A black metal fire escape runs down the center of the facade.

The top three floors of the building were used by pioneering photographer Mathew Brady as a portrait studio from 1853 to 1859, where he photographed many famous Americans. On the south side of the building a faded painted sign for Mathew Brady's Studio could once be seen by pedestrians on Broadway, but this was painted over before the building was designated a New York City landmark in 1990. The ground floor now houses PS Fabrics.
