Established in 1898. Designated in honor of Rear Admiral Samuel F. Du Pont, US Navy.

Formerly home to the Headquarters, Harbor Defenses of the Delaware, the Headquarters, 1st Engineer Regiment from 1922 to 1939, the Headquarters 21st Coast Artillery from 1940 to 1941, the 1st Company, Coast Defenses of the Delaware from 1919 to 1921, the 2nd Company, Coast Defenses of the Delaware from 1919 to 1922, the 112th Coast Artillery Company from 1922 to 1924, the 1st Engineers from 1922 to 1941, elements of 7th Coast Artillery from 1924 to 1941, and Battery A, 22nd Coast Artillery from 1940 to 1941.
