The original Delaware colony was originally chartered to encompass all lands within a 12 mile radius from the center of the courthouse in New Castle excluding land granted to New Jersey, but including the Delaware River. Unfortunately poor measurement of the Mason-Dixon Line cut off part of the circle in MD and left the so called Wedge as not part of any state until officially recognized by law in 1921.
