Green-Wood Cemetery was founded in 1838. The elaborate Gothic Revival style entrance gate was designed by Richard Upjohn in 1861. The sprawling 478 acres are home to over 600,000 graves. The cemetery is the final resting place for many well known individuals in all fields of endeavor. Interesting and notable monuments are located throughout the cemetery. Hills, dales, ponds and tree lined roads and paths make it a favorite spot for visitors to enjoy a park-like setting in the midst of city. Battle Hill, the highest point in Brooklyn and site of the first major battle in the American Revolutionary War following the Declaration of Independence, is on the cemetery grounds. The cemetery is a registered member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System. In 2006 the cemetery was designated as a National Historic Landmark.
